Problem
A strong burning plastic or chemical smell is coming from the pellet stove during operation.
Customers may also describe this as:
- Burning plastic smell
- Chemical smell
- New stove smell
- Burning odor
- Factory smell
- Strong odor during first burn
This condition most commonly occurs during the first few burns of a new stove.
Symptoms
One or more of the following may occur:
- Burning plastic smell
- Chemical odor
- Strong “new appliance” smell
- Odor strongest during first startup
- Smell decreases over time
Cause
This condition is normal for a new stove.
During initial operation, the stove burns off:
- Manufacturing residues
- Protective coatings
- Adhesives
- Residual oils
- Materials associated with the manufacturing process
This is commonly called the burn-off process or break-in period.
Recommended Burn-Off Procedure
To help reduce odor during initial use:
- Operate the stove on High Heat (Level 5).
- Run the stove in a well-ventilated area.
Recommended ventilation:
- Open windows
- Increase room airflow
- Use fans if needed
Some customers choose to perform the first burn outdoors when practical.
Expected Duration
The odor usually decreases after the first few burns.
Many customers report the smell dissipating within 1–2 days after completing the burn-off process.
Important Notes
A temporary odor during initial operation is expected and normal.
The smell should gradually decrease with use.
The burn-off process does not indicate damage or malfunction.
