Qustion: What is the metal ball and rod that pulls out at the top of the pellet stove?
Answer: On your ComfortBilt Pellet Stove you will notice a metal ball and rod located in the middle of the heat exchange tubes at the front/top of the unit. This device is called the heat tube scraper.
This assembly simply scrapes off any excess ash accumulation from the heat exchange tubes and drops it down towards the ash pan. It is usually advised to perform this when the stove is cool and while the front door is still shut.
It is a good rule of thumb to do this at least once daily to keep the heating tubes free of excess ash. Usually, 2 or 3 scrapes (pulling the rod out and in) is sufficient.
*Do NOT touch the scraper assembly while the stove is running or hot, as this location can get hot enough to cause burns.
